Giles woke with a pounding headache. Groaning, he managed to raise himself to a sitting position. ‘Bloody Hell!’ he cursed silently. ‘How much Scotch did I drink?’ He looked around for the bottle and saw its broken remains near the wall. He wondered if he’d dropped it or thrown it. His mood had changed from anger to sorrow and back again too many times to recall.
‘I was a fool,’ he thought. ‘I should have known she’d never love me.’ Memories of what he’d seen that morning threatened to overwhelm him.
He’d arrived home earlier than expected and decided to surprise Buffy. The sight that had greeted him ripped his heart from his chest. She was lying in bed, naked, with Merissa, one of the new Slayers, and two young men he didn’t recognize. He’d stumbled down the stairs to the kitchen and poured himself a drink. Not long after, Buffy’s guests had come downstairs.
They said Buffy had invited them over because he was out of town, that she was tired of waiting for him to get to the “good stuff.” When one of the young men began describing in detail what Buffy had done to him, Giles ordered them to leave his home. Then Merissa had commented as they were leaving, “Don’t worry. I’m sure she’ll do you, too. She’s insatiable.”
For the remainder of the morning, he had waited for Buffy to wake up and come downstairs; she never did.
Hearing glass crunch under his foot brought him back to the present. He couldn’t stay there any longer, and he didn’t know what he would do if Buffy came home. In fact, he was afraid of what he might do if he saw her. He’d never be able to live with himself if he hurt her. So, he cleaned up the broken glass and left the house.

Giles sat in his car. He’d been there for quite some time, trying to decide where to go. The only place that came to mind was the new Council headquarters; he could drown himself in work. The only thing holding him back was the thought that Buffy might be there. It was only a remote possibility, though, and if he stayed home, he would undeniably see her.
With his decision made, he started the car and headed for the abandoned boarding school they were now using as their headquarters.
‘It’s a large enough campus. I probably won’t see her, even if she is there.’
