“How dare you come here after what you did to me?” Buffy screamed as she suddenly sat up in the bed.
“Buffy, please calm down. It was only a dream,” Giles said more forcefully than intended.
“You’d like me to believe that, wouldn’t you? Then you can go on with your life like nothing happened.”
Their shouting began to attract a crowd of people. Buffy either didn’t notice them or didn’t care.
“Everyone wants to know what happened. Maybe I should tell them - unless you want to tell them yourself.” Her voice held a note of challenge, as if she was daring him.
“Buffy, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t know what happened to you,” he pleaded with her in confusion.
“No. Of course not,” she said. The sarcasm dripping from her words was unmistakable.
Something about the way she said those words itched at the back of his mind. He felt like she was mocking him.
“Should I tell them how you accused me of cheating on you? Should I tell them how you wouldn’t listen to me? Should I tell them how you forced yourself on me when I didn’t have the strength to stop you.?”
He staggered back as her words hit him. What had happened to cause her to believe such a thing? “Buffy, I don’t know why you think –”
Buffy cut him off. “When the doctors finish their tests, everyone will know.”
“What tests? I don’t understand.”
“DNA tests,” Willow whispered to him.
None of it made sense. Why would she accuse him? He hadn’t even talked to her. Yet, she was accusing him of raping her. He knew the tests would prove he hadn’t hurt her, but would she believe it?
“Buffy, we should discuss this privately once you’ve calmed down,” he said quietly. “I’m sure there’s a logical explanation.” His heart broke as he tried to think of what that reason could be. Maybe she’d been hurt by her new lovers and didn’t want to admit it. For a moment, he pictured finding them and exacting revenge for what they’d done. Deep down inside, he knew it would be more for what they’d done to him than for what they’d done to Buffy, but they would be punished.
“There’s nothing to discuss. You hurt me, and I never want to see you again. It’s very simple.” She stared at him, the hatred burning in her eyes. Giles could tell that there would be no reasoning with her now.
“Perhaps I should leave.” Feeling defeated, he almost choked on the words.
He stumbled out of the room, and headed back to his office. He knew someone was following him, most likely Faith. He let her follow; he had nothing to hide.
